Our family dry cleaning and laundry business began in 1936 by our grandparents, Walter S. and Mabel Lindsey Pope. It was called Peerless Cleaners and was located on Nogalitos. Their second store opened at S. Flores and Huff Avenue and was named Rawl's Cleaners, after my grandfather's brother.
n 1945, they moved the cleaners to 6218 S. Flores and have been there ever since. Our aunt and uncle, Charles and Madge Johnson, ran the family business upon our father's return from WWII, 36th Infantry Division.
In the 60's our parents, Walter (Rusty) and Nancy Elms Pope changed the plant's name to Scotchman Cleaners and Laundry. In the late 60's to early 70's, they acquired seven substations all located on the southside from Lackland AFB to McCreless Mall area. Mid 70's they downsized the dry cleaning business and then ventured into uniform rental and acquired some well respected accounts such as USAA and Zachry Construction. In the early 80's, the uniform rental business was sold and the dry cleaning and laundry was again the main interest.
Daughter, Melody and husband John Cooper and son eric, are currently operating the business. John has over 40 years experience in the laundry and dry cleaning business having worked at Scotchman Cleaners (with Melody's sister, Suzanne), Slater White and Pilgrim/Red Fox Cleaners. Our family has been blessed with serving the community for many decades and it is our hope to continue to serve with quality and personal care for many more years to come.
